I AM A JOB SEEKER I AM AN EMPLOYER

As a consequence of 2020’s latest economic events, more and more organizations are facing the necessity of being flexible, as well as being more efficient to adapt, innovate and orchestrate new processes company-wide. Remote working implementation was required and will probably remain for quite some time. Some of the following are common mistakes arising on teams with individuals not accustomed to remote working, but thankfully, all of them can be easily identified and fixed, without any major complications:

    • Procrastinating essential duties is a common pitfall, especially for employees not used to remote working. In a traditional workspace, where everyone is physically close – typically within visual range of one another, most employees naturally tend to stay on task, because it would be visually obvious if they were getting distracted. This dynamic changes when they are working remotely, as they are 100% in charge of their time and how it is being spent. Not everyone is as good at managing their own time and it is harder (but not impossible) for managers to identify this behavior in remote working employees and remedy the issue. If you or your employees are tempted to procrastinate, make sure you give yourself enough “buffer” time to catch up on your work to avoid missing deadlines and/or use good time-measuring tools such as setting alarms on your phone and using chronometers, to stay on track.
    • Another situation that can be linked or related to the previous point, is not having a defined schedule or having challenges with your organizational skills. When employees are in a traditional work environment, their managers (alongside the organization) commonly assist them in setting their work schedules. When working at home/remote, in most situations, the mentality shifts to production results, versus time allocation, meaning as long as the work is done by the time it is due, there should not be a problem. Use whatever tools you need (Outlook calendar, alarm clock, sticky notes, etc.) to maintain a defined schedule and remember to talk to your manager, if you need additional support.
    • Not creating a proper home office space typically diminishes productivity as well. A proper work space should be one that is free of distractions and contains all of the essentials you need, in order for you to do your work without having to leave the room, thus, being exposed to distractions. Most home offices are ideally quiet and clean, but some individuals do thrive off of controlled chaos. Being able to do your work correctly is, of course, only possible if you have the tools available to do so and a correct working space where you feel comfortable.
    • Lastly, connectivity/internet issues are bound to happen. When they do, it is vital to make sure you have multiple forms to communicate with your coworkers, since you will no longer have the default “ask them in person” option available. Relying on only one form of communication, especially email, can lead to a plethora of complications.
